Ondine is a lovely fiberglass fractional rig Luders 16 in excellent condition. Recent upgrades include a 2025 mast and rigging plus a new set of sails. Her hull was recently awlgripped royal blue.

Overview

The Elk Spar and Boat Shop in Bar Harbor, Maine, customized a number of new features. Varnished teak cabinsides and coamings make her appear as one of the original wooden Luders 16s. Ondine currently races with the Northeast Harbor Fleet off Mount Desert Island, Maine. If the new owner joins the Fleet, the sale includes a mooring at the Fleet, which is quite valuable given the considerable waiting list for moorings. The new (2025) mast and rigging are valued at $8,000. The lightly used sails include a 2024 main and jib and a 2021 spinnaker. She also comes with an older set of sails, including a Kevlar genoa jib. Her well-thought-out systems allow for enjoyable racing and sailing.

ACCOMMODATIONS AND DESIGN

In the early 1930s Alfred Edward (Bill) Luders set out to scale down the then-modern International Rule Sloop, and the result is a compact 26 footer with a 16'4" waterline, a beam of 5'9" and a draft of 4'0". The narrow beam gives the boat a distinctive profile rather than a voluminous one. A total of about 300 boats were built between 1933 - 1979 with fifteen built in 1934 to race at Fishers Island, New York. These boats are currently quite popular and have increased in value.
